At PHX Training, we are proud to support International Day of Education.
We believe that everyone deserves access to a quality education, and we are often one of the first steps people take when returning to learning and building a successful future.
From upskilling those already in employment, to supporting people who have been out of work, and individuals who left school without qualifications or did not thrive in traditional education settings, we are committed to leaving no one behind.
Our staff are the heart of our organisation. Below, you’ll discover their journeys into education and what inspired them to support others in achieving their potential.
Leigh: Tutor – Workington
After leaving the army, where I had gained extensive experience in training, an old army friend encouraged me to pursue a career in adult education by teaching NVQs. I began as a new assessor, working across a wide range of qualifications including driving, warehousing, customer service, retail, plant loading and unloading, and forklift operations—skills I was well-prepared for as a qualified forklift instructor and examiner.
My career progressed quickly, and after working for a large NVQ company in the Midlands, I decided to go self-employed and established my own limited company. Through contracting with a training provider, I delivered QCF qualifications in the logistics industry and later moved into teaching apprenticeships, all while continuing to expand my own expertise by gaining further qualifications such as my IQA.
For nearly 12 years, I worked across the UK, living out of a suitcase and supporting learners nationwide, before deciding to find a role closer to home.
That decision led me to PHX Training, where I have now been for over three years, delivering a wide range of qualifications while also achieving new ones myself, continuing my commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.
Carol: Tutor – Blackpool
I have worked as a coach, mentor, and tutor for several decades. What I enjoy most about this work is the opportunity to support and guide individuals as they progress in their careers and achieve their personal goals.
I genuinely enjoy engaging with learners, getting to know them as individuals, and supporting them throughout their learning journey. Helping learners build confidence in themselves and develop their skills, knowledge, and professional behaviours is particularly rewarding.
The most satisfying part of my role is informing learners that they have successfully completed their course and achieved their goals. It is especially fulfilling to see learners apply what they have learned in job interviews and secure employment as a result.
Chris: Tutor – Barrow
Whilst working as a Gym Instructor, I was approached by a Training Provider who were recruiting for learners.
When I explained that I had all the relevant qualifications, they asked if I would be interested in applying for a position as a Tutor/Assessor. I thought ‘why not?’, sent my CV and within a week I had been interviewed and was offered the role.

Asma: Tutor – Preston
My journey with PHX began in January 2017 when I took my first steps as a trainee tutor. This initial role provided me with a solid foundation, allowing me to develop my skills and knowledge in the field. As I progressed, I transitioned into the role of trainer and assessor, where I had the privilege of working on various contracts and collaborating with some truly extraordinary individuals. Each experience enriched my understanding and contributed significantly to my professional growth. Throughout this journey, I have absorbed invaluable lessons that have shaped my approach to education and mentorship.
Becoming a tutor was a natural progression for me, driven by my enduring passion for helping others. I have always found immense joy in supporting learners as they navigate their educational journeys , particularly during challenging times. Witnessing their growth and success as they achieve their qualifications is incredibly rewarding. It is not just about conveying knowledge; it is about fostering confidence and resilience in learners, enabling them to realise their potential. The opportunity to guide individuals through their learning experiences and celebrate their accomplishments fuels my commitment to tutoring is what motivates me to continue in this fulfilling role.
As, I embark on the next chapter of my career by completing the Internal Quality Assurer (IQA) qualification. I am filled with enthusiasm and anticipation for the opportunities that lie ahead, eager to continue my personal and professional development within PHX.
